What will this cost us?
One price for one agreed piece of work, so you know the number before we start. To get there we need a 30-minute call: how many sites, how many people on the books, what the shifts look like and what software you already use. Then we write down what we will build, in what order and by when, with the price next to it. Running it afterwards is a separate monthly fee, quoted at the same time. Anything you add while we build is priced and approved first.
Have you really done this for factories before?
Yes. We built the hours and attendance software for a three-plant manufacturer, covering shifts, contract labor and the file payroll needs. It cut their timesheet paperwork by 90% and took three weeks. We also built maintenance software connected to a machinery maker's ERP, which saved $1.2M a year and cut unplanned downtime by 72%. That is the factory work we can point to, and we would rather say it plainly than hint at a longer list.
What happens once it is switched on?
We look after it. We watch the software, mend faults within a time we agree with you, keep it patched and secure, and keep improving it as the plant changes. Every month you get a short report: what stayed up, what we fixed, what you asked for and what we think should come next. Software in a factory is not finished the day it goes live. That is the day it starts.
Will it work with the software we already have?
Nearly always. Most factories already run something for the accounts, plus a machine log and a handful of spreadsheets. We do the joining-up, so a figure is typed in once instead of three times. If one of your tools has no sensible way of being connected, we say so straight away and suggest a simple import and export instead.
How long before it is running at all our sites?
We switch on one plant at a time rather than everywhere at once. The first site takes the longest: that is where you find the shift pattern nobody mentioned. Later sites go quicker because the surprises are behind you. The dates are written down before we start and depend on how many sites and shift patterns you have and how much joining-up is needed.
Will we have to change how the plant works?
No. Software that fights the way a plant really runs gets worked around within a fortnight, and then you are paying for something nobody uses. We build around your shift patterns, your contractor arrangements and the way your supervisors already write things down. Supervisors and operators get their hands on it while we are still building.
